Certain lines of business require explicit consent, authorisation or a license. Some of these areas are introduced under the heading Special conditions. Whether your business falls within the categories requiring explicit consent, is a matter that should be raised with the proper authorities. If you find it difficult to identify the correct authorities or in doubt, contact the Narvik business hotline (800 33 840).
To start a business, you have to be at least 18 years of age and not under suspension from a previous bankruptcy. As a foreign citizen you have to apply for a personal identification number or D-number. If a D-number has not been allocated, the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities will requisition one from the Norwegian national census register (Sentralkontoret for folkeregistrering). Use the form "Request for allocation of D-number" (Anmodning om tildeling av D-nummer) and attach a clear, signed copy of the foreign person's passport. The form can be downloaded from the Brønnøysund Register Centre - see the link in the right hand column.
Before you start: Carefully consider your qualifications for starting and developing your own enterprise based on your business idea. What are your advantages / your strengths, and just as important, what are your weaknesses and how to compensate for these.
