Licences for catering and boarding business

Some types of business services require special licences. Among these are catering and boarding business sector (hotell- og restaurantbransjen).

The business sector comprises operation of hotels, pensions and motels with or without catering, (youth) hostels, tourist cabins, camping sites and other overnight accommodation. In addition, operation of restaurants, cafés, serving of foodstuff on trains, fast food restaurants, hot dog kiosks, salad bars, pubs, bars, coffee bars, canteens and catering services.

The actual licences are related to serving of foodstuff and alcoholic beverages, but even starting and running a hotel or pension involves dealing with different authorities resolving questions about fire protection and fire exits, working conditions, waste regulations and electrical hazards to mention a few. In addition to dealing with the local authorities (municipality), we advise you contact the bodies listed in the right hand column.

In order to run a catering business, such as café or restaurant, you must have authorization from the municipality where the business is located.

The local branch of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) must accept the premises and the business, before the authorization is given. Also, the manager cannot have a criminal record.
